Isle of Man TT

The world's most dangerous and prestigious motorcycle road race

Isle of Man TT

The Isle of Man TT is simply the greatest motorcycle road racing event on Earth. Since 1907, the TT has pushed riders and machines to their absolute limits on the infamous 37.73-mile Mountain Course - a public road circuit that winds through villages, over mountains, and past stone walls at speeds exceeding 200mph.

Why the TT is Legendary

The TT isn't just a race - it's a pilgrimage. Every year, over 40,000 passionate fans descend on the Isle of Man for TT fortnight, transforming this small island into the motorcycle capital of the world. The atmosphere is electric, the racing is breathtaking, and the TT experience is utterly unique.

Unlike short circuit racing, TT riders must memorise every bend, bump, and braking point across nearly 38 miles of challenging terrain. One lap of the TT course is longer than most entire race meetings. The concentration required is immense, the margins for error non-existent.

TT Race Classes

The TT features multiple classes to showcase different machinery:

  • Superbike TT - The blue riband event featuring 1000cc machines
  • Senior TT - The most prestigious TT race, traditionally closing the festival
  • Supersport TT - 600cc machines battling over four laps
  • Superstock TT - Production-based machines closest to road bikes
  • Supertwin TT - Twin-cylinder machines in a thrilling lightweight class
  • Sidecar TT - The incredible three-wheeled outfits with passenger hanging off

TT Records

The TT lap record continues to tumble as riders and technology evolve:

  • Outright TT Lap Record: 135.452mph - Peter Hickman (2018)
  • First 130mph TT Lap: John McGuinness (2007)
  • Most TT Wins: Joey Dunlop (26 victories)
  • Course Length: 37.73 miles (60.72 km)

TT Fortnight Schedule

TT fortnight typically runs from late May to early June and includes:

  • Practice Week - Evening practice sessions to learn the TT course
  • Race Week - Six days of TT racing action
  • Mad Sunday - When fans can ride the TT course themselves

The TT is Non-Profit

The TT is organised by the Isle of Man Government's Department for Enterprise as a non-profit event. All proceeds are reinvested into the island's motorsport heritage, course safety improvements, and infrastructure. The TT generates an estimated £30 million+ for the local economy.

TT Safety

The TT takes rider safety seriously while acknowledging the inherent risks of road racing. Continuous investment goes into course improvements, medical facilities, and rider training. Every TT competitor knows the risks and chooses to race - that's what makes the TT so special.

Plan Your TT Visit

Attending the TT is a bucket-list experience for any motorsport fan. Book accommodation early (12+ months ahead for the best options), plan your viewing spots, and prepare for an unforgettable fortnight of TT action.
