Five days of celebration as the Commonwealth Games baton visits iconic Island landmarks

The Isle of Man is gearing up for a week of sporting pride and community celebration this weekend, as the King's Baton Relay arrives on Island shores ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Running from Saturday, 13 June to Thursday, 18 June, this five-day event will see the specially designed baton travel across Manx landmarks, charities, and sporting venues—creating a perfect opportunity for visitors and locals alike to witness a piece of Commonwealth history.

A Baton Designed to Celebrate Manx Heritage

The Isle of Man's custom baton, crafted by local artist Lesley Sleight, showcases the Island's most iconic symbols: the Laxey Wheel, Castle Rushen, and Tynwald Hill. This year marks a significant change to the traditional relay format—instead of one baton passing between nations, each of the 74 Commonwealth territories has been given its own baton to customise and celebrate. These will all come together at the opening ceremony in Glasgow, creating a unified celebration of Commonwealth diversity.

What to Expect: A Week of Island Heritage and Sport

The relay promises an eclectic mix of experiences across the Island. Visitors and residents can enjoy scenic journeys on the Douglas Horse Tram (celebrating 150 years) and the Manx Electric Railway, visits to beloved attractions like the Laxey Wheel and Rushen Abbey, and encounters with local sporting heroes. The schedule also highlights Manx community spirit, with activities ranging from RNLI lifeboat trips to environmental initiatives like the Beach Buddies Beach Clean at Peel, contributing to the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Campaign.

  • Saturday, 13 June: Swimming gala at NSC Pool, Douglas; lawn bowls at Onchan Park; vintage vehicles at Doctor's Meadow, Castletown

Basil Bielich, President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, expressed his pride in how the relay is coming together, emphasizing excitement for Team Isle of Man's prospects at the Glasgow Games this summer. The 2026 Commonwealth Games run from 23 July to 2 August, and this relay marks the official countdown to one of sport's greatest celebrations.
