Nearly 3,000 Pilates enthusiasts gather at historic Knockaloe Farm for record-breaking attempt

On Sunday, 19 July 2026, almost 3,000 fitness enthusiasts descended on Knockaloe Farm to participate in an ambitious world record attempt for the largest Pilates class ever held. Though the 2,804 participants fell just short of the existing record of 3,486 set in Turkey in 2013, the event succeeded in breaking a separate world record and celebrating a remarkable piece of the Island's history.

A Record-Breaking Day at a Historic Location

While the main Pilates class record remained unbeaten, participants did achieve success in breaking the world record for the most people performing the "standing roll down exercise" for one minute. The choice of venue added profound historical significance to the event: Knockaloe Farm was home to the world's largest civilian internment camp during World War I.

Joseph Pilates and the Birth of a Global Movement

Among those detained at Knockaloe over a century ago was Joseph Pilates himself, who used his time at the camp to develop the physical training system that would eventually bear his name. The Pilates method—rooted in principles of physical and mental wellness—is now practised by millions of people worldwide, making Knockaloe a truly significant birthplace of modern fitness.

The Class and the Experience

The event featured a 30-minute standing Pilates class designed to accommodate participants of all abilities and experience levels. Led by instructor Hannah Storey of Exhale Pilates, the class incorporated "old school" exercises first developed by Joseph Pilates at Knockaloe over 100 years ago. Notable participants included actor John Rhys-Davies, television personality Noel Edmonds, Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, and Chief Minister Alfred Cannan.

The event was organised by Ramsey Crookall in collaboration with 34Moves and Visit Isle of Man, with all proceeds benefiting Island charities. Though the turnout exceeded expectations—causing a brief delay as crowds arrived—the day proved to be a memorable celebration of wellness, history, and community spirit.
