Protect nesting seabirds this summer – climbing and drones banned at key sites
If you're planning a summer adventure to some of the Isle of Man's most dramatic coastal spots, there's an important restriction to know about. Manx National Heritage is urging visitors, climbers, and drone enthusiasts to steer clear of nesting birds at The Chasms and Sugarloaf Rock during the critical breeding season.
To safeguard seabirds during spring and summer, climbing and all drone use is banned until Saturday, August 1st. This temporary restriction is essential for protecting nesting birds during their most vulnerable period, when disturbance can have serious consequences for breeding success and chick survival.
It's worth noting that deliberately or recklessly disturbing nesting wild birds is an offence under Isle of Man law. Beyond the legal angle, visitors should be aware that seabirds may be carrying bird flu, which could prompt additional area closures if cases are detected.
The Island offers countless spectacular coastal walks and climbing opportunities outside these restricted zones. Before heading out, check with Manx National Heritage for updates on access restrictions and alternative routes that let you enjoy our dramatic coastlines responsibly. Respect for wildlife ensures these beautiful sites remain thriving habitats for generations of visitors to come.
