A French motorcycle enthusiast visiting the Isle of Man for the TT races has learned an expensive lesson about the island's strict traffic regulations. Aymeric Pierre Antoine Guinoiseau, 36, from Avranches, was fined £500 after making an illegal U-turn on the notorious Mountain Road in poor weather conditions, putting himself and other road users at serious risk.

TT Visitor's Wrong Turn Lands Him in Court

The incident occurred on 1 June at 5.40pm, when police officers spotted Guinoiseau riding his Ducati past The Bungalow before stopping and reversing direction in heavy fog and rain. He travelled approximately 100 metres in the wrong direction at around 20 miles-per-hour before being apprehended. Officers were forced to immediately halt other traffic on the route to prevent a collision.

Appearing at Douglas Courthouse with a French interpreter, Guinoiseau explained that he had panicked after losing sight of his travelling companions—his father and brother—and feared an accident had occurred. His advocate highlighted that the welder had never visited the UK or Isle of Man before and spoke no English, describing the incident as a genuine misunderstanding rather than deliberate rule-breaking.

Mountain Road Safety is No Joke

Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood accepted that Guinoiseau hadn't intentionally broken the law, but was firm about the seriousness of his actions. "Riding against the one-way direction on the Mountain Road can be extremely serious," she warned. "The signs are very clear. It is your responsibility to make sure you are riding in accordance with all road signs and restrictions."

In addition to the £500 fine, Guinoiseau was ordered to pay £125 in prosecution costs. Both amounts must be paid immediately, or he faces 40 days in custody. The case serves as a stark reminder for TT visitors that the island's traffic laws are strictly enforced, particularly on the challenging Mountain Road course.
