Isle of Man and Liverpool mark one year of partnership focused on boosting travel connections
The Isle of Man and Liverpool are strengthening their ties, marking the first anniversary of a landmark cooperation agreement that promises to boost tourism, business, and transport links between the two regions. The partnership, signed on 27 March 2025, is already delivering tangible results, with government officials highlighting increased business engagement and enhanced travel routes as key successes.
The cooperation agreement between the Manx Government, Liverpool City Council, and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is creating a framework for practical collaboration across multiple sectors. Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, emphasised the importance of these "nearest neighbours" working together, noting that the past year has involved building relationships across many different sectors and business organisations.
Deputy Chief Minister Jane Poole-Wilson echoed the sentiment, saying: "The Irish Sea separates us geographically but it has always connected us economically, culturally and personally." The agreement focuses on five key areas:
The government is highlighting the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool as evidence of its commitment to strengthening the route. The facility provides a permanent base that has proven essential for sustained demand on Steam Packet Company sailings. The government is further enhancing the service through commercial partnerships, broadcast campaigns, and tailored travel packages to attract visitors.
Air connectivity remains equally important, with Liverpool designated as a core route within the Isle of Man's Strategic Air Services Policy. Visitors should note that easyJet service between the Isle of Man and Liverpool operates on limited schedules, with no flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between July and October.
The next phase of the partnership will focus on university partnerships, digital collaboration, and maximising use of the ferry terminal. Business engagement is already increasing through renewed connections between the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and the Isle of Man's Department for Enterprise. For travellers, this means improved services, better-coordinated travel packages, and stronger cultural and commercial ties that will enhance the visitor experience between both destinations.
