Heritage groups unite to save Georgian landmark from demolition in Castletown
A beloved Georgian property in the heart of Castletown is facing demolition, and heritage organisations across the Isle of Man are fighting back. Westhill House, built in the early 1800s and home to the historic Buchan School since 1940, sits at the centre of a conservation debate that could define how the island balances modern development with preserving its architectural past.
Located near The Crofts in Castletown's conservation zone, Westhill House is considered one of the finest examples of Manx Georgian architecture. The property faces demolition as part of a residential redevelopment scheme by Hartford Homes. Three major heritage organisations have joined forces to protect it: Castletown Heritage, Manx National Heritage, and Save Mann's Heritage are now calling for a building preservation notice to be served on the property.
Sue Scott, speaking from the executive committee of Castletown Heritage, emphasised the significance of this moment: "In a UNESCO biosphere reserve we should surely be protecting the very best of our past for a secure and prosperous future." She highlighted that losing Westhill House would represent an irreplaceable loss not just architecturally, but as a vital part of the island's story—particularly regarding the history of female education and Castletown's two-century evolution.
Westhill House ranks second only to Lorne House (the former residence of the Lieutenant Governor, which is legally protected) in terms of heritage importance in Castletown. Demolishing it would contradict the Isle of Man Strategic Plan and jeopardise the character of the ancient capital. Heritage groups point to a nearby precedent at Westham, where historic buildings were successfully retained alongside new residential development.
If you share concerns about this proposal, Manx residents and visitors can lodge objections by emailing [email protected]. The heritage community continues to advocate for a solution that meets housing needs whilst preserving Castletown's architectural legacy.
