Beach season brings record visitors—and record litter. Here's what locals want you to know.

The Isle of Man's beaches have been packed this week as glorious summer weather draws visitors and locals alike to the shoreline. Towns like Peel and Port Erin have welcomed hundreds of seaside enthusiasts eager to make the most of the warm temperatures. However, the surge in visitors has come at a cost—with troubling amounts of litter left behind on our precious beaches.

Beaches Under Pressure: A Growing Litter Problem

Last night (25 June), Port Erin beach was found covered in discarded mess, including pizza boxes, chip wrappers, cans, and bottles. Hannah Mackenzie, Chair of Port Erin Commissioners who oversee beach maintenance, has a straightforward message for beachgoers: if you're going to enjoy the beach, take responsibility for your own litter.

This isn't an isolated incident. Local environmental charity Beach Buddies has been battling this problem for years, with founder Bill Dale expressing concern that the message about keeping beaches clean simply isn't getting through to visitors and residents.

What You Can Do

Whether you're planning a day trip to one of our beautiful beaches or you're a regular visitor, the message is clear: pack out what you pack in. Dispose of your litter responsibly in designated bins, and consider taking extra rubbish with you. By taking personal responsibility, you help protect the Isle of Man's stunning coastal environment for everyone to enjoy.
