Education figures reveal growing diversity in Manx schools
The Isle of Man's education system is becoming increasingly multicultural, with figures released this week showing that over 1,000 students across Manx schools are learning English as a second language. The revelation comes as Education Minister Daphne Caine responded to questions in the House of Keys about language support in our island's schools.
According to data from December 2025, a total of 1,060 students are currently recorded as having English as a second language in Manx schools. This significant figure underscores the island's evolving demographic landscape and the important role our education system plays in welcoming families from around the world.
The figures were released following a parliamentary question from Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse, who sought clarity on how many recently-arrived children in island schools were still developing their English language skills. While Mrs Caine's department was unable to provide specific data on when children had relocated to the Isle of Man, the overall figures paint a picture of an increasingly diverse student population.
For visitors and potential relocators considering the Isle of Man, these figures demonstrate the island's commitment to educational inclusivity and integration. The presence of 1,060 English language learners reflects the appeal of Manx schools to international families seeking quality education in a safe, welcoming community. Educational support systems for language learners remain an important consideration for those planning extended stays or relocations to the island.
