Port Erin florist crafts the iconic laurel wreaths for TT winners
When the fastest motorcycle racers in the world step onto the TT Grandstand podium next week, they'll be crowned with something uniquely special — a hand-crafted laurel wreath created right here on the Isle of Man. Behind these iconic victory garlands is Heidi Baker, a talented florist from The Flower Studio in Port Erin, who has been entrusted with this prestigious honour since last year's races.
For many Island businesses, the TT used to be a quieter time of year — in fact, Heidi would even close her shop during the racing fortnight. All that has changed. Now, the annual event has become a highlight of her calendar, with the responsibility of creating the wreaths that will adorn the shoulders of champions.
"We've got a couple of clients that live on the TT course who are happy to supply us with the laurel leaves," Heidi explains. This local partnership means the wreaths are made entirely from materials sourced around the famous course itself, adding an extra layer of authenticity and Island pride to each creation.
What makes Heidi's work even more special is her commitment to keeping the tradition truly Manx. The metal frames for each wreath are crafted by Island Iron Craft, ensuring that every element of the victory garland is produced locally. It's a perfect example of how the Island's creative businesses come together to celebrate the TT's global appeal.
Visitors attending the TT races won't miss the chance to see these beautiful creations up close. The Grandstand will feature a special display showcasing one of Heidi's laurel wreaths, where spectators can take photographs alongside this iconic symbol of racing victory. Better still, the display is part of a fundraising initiative supporting The Great North Air Ambulance — adding a charitable dimension to the celebration.
