New foundation launches ambitious research programme into sharks, skates and rays
The waters around the Isle of Man are home to more fascinating marine life than many realise. A new Manx Shark Foundation has just launched with an exciting mission: to uncover the secrets of sharks, skates, and rays that inhabit our coastal waters and help visitors and residents understand these magnificent creatures better.
The foundation is committed to advancing shark science and conservation through collaboration with researchers, local anglers, fisheries experts, and ocean enthusiasts. This innovative approach brings together diverse groups who share a passion for protecting Manx marine life and understanding the species that make our waters unique.
If you spot a shark, skate, or ray during your visit or your time on the Island, you can contribute to this important research. The foundation is asking the public to report sightings through the Manx Dolphin and Whale Watch charity, a trusted organisation already doing excellent work monitoring marine mammals in our waters.
Whether you're a keen angler, marine biologist, or simply curious about the ocean, the Manx Shark Foundation offers a fantastic opportunity to engage with conservation efforts while exploring one of the Island's greatest natural assets. Keep your eyes peeled during boat trips, coastal walks, or fishing expeditions—you might just help scientists discover something remarkable about Isle of Man's shark populations.
