Popular Douglas route reopens early as essential wastewater works complete ahead of schedule

Good news for travellers navigating Douglas — the Old Castletown Road at White Hoe is reopening to full two-way traffic this afternoon, two days ahead of schedule. From 3:30pm on 23 March, the congestion that's plagued the area for two weeks will finally ease as Manx Utilities completes essential wastewater infrastructure work.

Road Reopens After Critical Infrastructure Work

Since 9 March, the section near the White Hoe Industrial Estate has been closed or restricted to single-lane traffic, causing significant congestion throughout the Douglas area. The early reopening comes after mid-day concrete strength tests confirmed the newly laid surface has reached the required safety standards for vehicles to pass safely in both directions.

Manx Utilities expressed their satisfaction with the accelerated timeline: "We are pleased to be able to reopen this section earlier than planned and would like to thank everyone for their patience while this essential work has been carried out." Crews are now completing final preparations, including removing traffic management and diversion signs.

What's Next: Easter Holiday Works

While this closure lifts, travellers should note that further work is scheduled for the Kewaigue wastewater network upgrade. Full road closures will take place over two weekends during the Easter school holidays:

  • 11–12 April
  • 18–19 April

Outside these dates, single-lane traffic management will continue where conditions allow, with access maintained via Port Soderick. An additional three-day period of daytime restrictions (9:30am–3:00pm) will be confirmed later in coordination with the Department of Infrastructure. Reassuringly, access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout all phases of work.
