New facilities planned to enhance the seaside experience for swimmers and beach visitors
Port St Mary is set to welcome a new changing facility at Chapel Beach, offering sea swimmers and visitors much-needed amenities with panoramic views over the water. The Port St Mary Commissioners discussed the exciting plans at their March board meeting, marking a significant step towards improving the popular beach destination on the Isle of Man.
The commissioners have commissioned provisional plans for a modern changing area that would include two changing rooms, a public toilet, and a storage bench with hooks for towels and coats. The facility is designed to overlook the beach, providing swimmers with convenient access to essential amenities while enjoying the coastal setting. The structure could feature a protective roof, making it practical in the island's changeable weather.
According to Commissioner David Scott, a local architect firm has already drawn up the designs. The next crucial step involves establishing land ownership around the beach site, which will allow the team to understand the existing infrastructure and determine the complexity of the planning application process.
Beyond the changing facilities, the commissioners have also approved the installation of three 'mental health benches' around the port. These brightly coloured seats, offered by the charity Ed Space, are designed to encourage community conversation and support wellbeing. Commissioner Lawrence Vaughn-Williams highlighted the value of early intervention in mental health, endorsing the initiative based on his professional experience.
The village will also benefit from three new defibrillators installed with support from the local rifle club. One device will be located at the rifle club itself, while the others will be positioned at the town hall, enhancing emergency response capabilities across Port St Mary.
The Port St Mary Commissioners will next convene on Wednesday 29 April to discuss further developments in these community improvement projects.
