Port St Mary RNLI rescues kayakers caught in strong tidal currents off Langness

Two kayakers had a dramatic reminder of the Isle of Man's powerful tidal conditions when they found themselves struggling against strong currents off Langness on Monday afternoon. Fortunately, the crew from Port St Mary RNLI was quickly on the scene to assist, demonstrating why checking local water conditions is essential before any water-based adventure on the island.

Quick Rescue in Challenging Tidal Waters

The Frank Martin lifeboat was launched on 25 May following an emergency call from a concerned member of the public. The two kayakers, who had set out from Derbyhaven Bay, found themselves unable to make progress as they ventured beyond the bay's shelter into significantly stronger tidal currents. Both paddlers were reported to be safe and well throughout the incident.

Essential Safety Tips for Water Activities

Andy Mulhern, Operations Officer with Isle of Man Coastguard, used the incident as an important reminder for visitors and locals alike: "Getting caught out by tidal conditions can happen quickly, so it's important to check conditions and plan your route before heading out." The message is clear—preparation can prevent emergencies.

If you're planning any water-based activities around the Isle of Man, the Coastguard recommends:

  • Always check weather forecasts and tide times before departing
  • Research local currents and their behaviour in your chosen area
  • Carry a reliable means of communication, ideally a VHF radio
  • Wear suitable flotation devices at all times

Whether you're kayaking, sailing, or enjoying other water sports during your visit to the island, respecting the sea and understanding its conditions is key to a safe and enjoyable experience.
