Regulator launches formal investigation into Manx Radio's speech content levels following Gold launch
The Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) has begun a formal investigation into potential licence compliance issues at Manx Radio, raising concerns that the station may not be meeting its broadcasting obligations. The inquiry centres on whether speech content has fallen below the required 40 percent threshold following the launch of Manx Radio Gold in 2024.
When Manx Radio Gold launched two years ago, CURA determined it did not require a separate broadcasting licence and should be treated as part of Manx Radio's overall programming output. However, upon analysing the combined output of both stations, the regulator became concerned that total speech content now falls short of regulatory requirements.
The issue has been simmering for some time, with CURA previously inviting the station to propose solutions. Despite discussions, the two parties have reached an impasse, prompting the regulator to escalate the matter to its compliance and enforcement section for formal investigation.
CURA will gather evidence from Manx Radio and other relevant parties before making a determination. Should a breach be confirmed, the authority has indicated it may issue regulatory directions or remedies to bring the station back into compliance. The regulator emphasised it had little choice but to treat the situation as a potential licence breach.
Radio Manx Limited has been contacted for comment on the investigation.
