The Isle of Man community is pausing to reflect on one of aviation's darkest chapters this February, as the island marks the 68th anniversary of the Winter Hill disaster. On 27 February 1958, a tragic plane crash on the slopes near Horwich claimed the lives of 35 Manx residents—a loss that remains deeply woven into the island's collective memory. Of the 42 passengers and crew on board, only seven survived the UK's worst high ground aviation accident.

Today, a solemn gathering takes place at Cooil y Ree Park in St John's at 11am, organised by the Rotary Club of Douglas and open to all members of the public who wish to pay their respects. The service also honours the remarkable rescue efforts and compassion shown by the people of Horwich and their local Rotary Club in the aftermath of the disaster—a neighbourly kindness that crossed the Irish Sea and became part of both communities' shared history.

Following the service, attendees are invited to join refreshments at Green's Café, providing an opportunity for reflection and remembrance. For visitors and residents alike, the Winter Hill disaster remains a poignant reminder of the island's connections to the wider British Isles and the resilience of Manx communities in times of tragedy.
