Four Douglas teenagers recognised for environmental commitment through Duke of Edinburgh scheme
Four teenagers from Ballakermeen High School in Douglas are being celebrated for their dedication to keeping the Isle of Man clean. All aged 14, these young volunteers have been making a real difference in their community by regularly collecting litter as part of their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. Their inspiring efforts show that environmental responsibility and community spirit are thriving among the island's young people.
The group has partnered with Beach Buddies, a local environmental charity, to tackle litter across Douglas town centre, the outskirts, and Millennium Oak Wood. Co-ordinated by one of the girls' mother, Amanda Cafearo, the team meets weekly armed with litter pickers, gloves, and hand gel—all generously provided by Beach Buddies. What started as a Duke of Edinburgh requirement has blossomed into something far more meaningful for these four young volunteers.
The girls describe their volunteering experience as genuinely enjoyable and rewarding. Geneva explains: "We really like what Beach Buddies does and this was a good opportunity to get involved." Halle adds, "It's actually really good fun," while Tara admits she never expected litter picking to be so satisfying. Zara reflects on how the experience makes you feel good and has been profoundly positive overall. Public feedback has been encouraging, with locals appreciating their efforts to maintain the island's natural beauty.
The team is working towards completing 26 hours of volunteering to achieve their bronze medal, with many participants progressing on to silver and gold awards. Beach Buddies founder Bill Dale praised the girls for "setting a fantastic example," emphasising how their involvement demonstrates a growing awareness of environmental responsibility across the island. Since its creation in 2006, Beach Buddies has supported hundreds of young people through Duke of Edinburgh schemes and continues to welcome new volunteers and community groups dedicated to keeping the Isle of Man clean and green.
