Authorities warn of extreme fire danger during this year's TT races
As thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts prepare to descend on the Isle of Man for the 2026 TT races, officials have issued a stark warning: wildfire risk across the island is at very high levels. With dry conditions and strong winds creating a perfect storm for ignition, authorities are urging visitors and residents alike to exercise extreme caution in the countryside during the festival.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has sounded the alarm, warning that both upland and lowland habitats are dangerously dry. The combination of parched vegetation and windy conditions means that a single spark could rapidly develop into a major blaze, threatening wildlife, livestock, public safety, and potentially even disrupting the famous racing events themselves.
"One spark could set off a blaze" under these conditions, the department cautioned. Visitors planning to explore the island's scenic countryside should stay on designated paths, avoid any activities that could create fire risk, and be particularly vigilant during the peak TT period.
Visitors should be aware of several operational challenges affecting TT week. The Department of Infrastructure has removed flags from the TT Grandstand due to unsafe wind conditions, while Ronaldsway Airport continues to experience disruptions from fog and mist. Additionally, Bus Vannin is advising spectators not to linger at bus stops around the TT course, and the clerk of the course has announced a one-hour delay to today's racing schedule.
Despite these challenges, TT 2026 remains one of the world's most thrilling motorsport events. Plan ahead, stay fire-safe, and make the most of your Isle of Man experience.
