Quirky island tradition returns with tin bath races, snake racing, and more
Mark your calendars for one of the Isle of Man's most unique summer events! The World Tin Bath Championships make their triumphant return to Castletown today, Saturday 4 July, bringing 55 years of eccentric island tradition to the picturesque harbour town.
Organised by the Castletown Ale Drinkers Society, this beloved event has become a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Beyond the famous tin bath races that give the championships their name, spectators can expect to witness the hilarious spectacle of snake racing and the thrills of man-powered flight competitions—a uniquely Manx blend of tradition and theatrical fun.
If you're planning to attend, be aware that Castle Street, Thirtle Bridge, and Bridge Street will close to traffic between 12:30pm and 6:30pm. Additional road closures affect Bank Street, Back Hope Street, Victoria Road, Hope Street, Quayside, and The Steps—all necessary to keep competitors safe and give spectators prime viewing spots along the harbour.
Coming by bus? Bus Vannin services from Douglas will divert via the bypass and Arbory Road to Castle Rushen High School before heading south to Castletown Square. Services from the South follow the same route in reverse. Plan your journey accordingly to make the most of this unmissable Manx celebration.
