Severe gale force winds expected Thursday – travel plans may be disrupted
If you're planning to travel to or from the Isle of Man this Thursday, it's worth keeping a close eye on the weather forecast. The Ronaldsway Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for gale to severe gale force winds, which will be in effect from 2am through to 3pm on 12 March. Southwest winds are expected to develop overnight, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour across the island, and potentially exceeding 65 miles per hour in exposed coastal areas and on higher ground.
Travel disruption is likely, with fallen branches and trees possible across the island. The Steam Packet Company has already warned that ferry sailings between the Isle of Man and the UK mainland are at risk. A decision regarding tonight's 7.15pm sailing from Douglas to Heysham will be announced by 5.15pm – so if you're booked on this or subsequent sailings, check the Steam Packet website for updates before heading to the terminal.
Whether you're a visitor caught mid-holiday or a local planning your week, make sure to allow extra time for journeys and keep an eye on travel operator announcements. While the warning is relatively short-lived, lasting just 13 hours, it's worth being prepared for delays and possible cancellations if you need to cross the Irish Sea during this period.
